What Power Has Meant to Me

I never sought power. I sought solutions. I saw problems that needed to be solved, issues that needed resolution. The power I gained came as a surprise, and it came rather quickly. What I didn’t know served me well. I didn’t know you were supposed to just listen for a while, get the “lay of the land,” keep your mouth shut. I dived right in, brought people together, and took control. What I found most helpful, and what women do instinctively, was to bring people along.

When I began my career, I was often the only woman I encountered in my business, and on the boards and commissions I served on. So I didn’t have many women leaders to learn from. I became mayor when the five largest cities in Texas were all headed by women, and Ann Richards was governor. Because of this unique situation, we all received a lot of media attention and I began to read about how women lead. It was then that I began to see the differences in how we use power and how we make decisions. Women lead inclusively, not exclusively, so that the solution comes by getting others to buy into your program. We are much more win/win than male leaders.
